By being aware of the common causes of slow and clogged drains and sewers, you can prevent drainage problems before they happen.

Do you have mature trees in your front yard?

Think about your trees. The sewer that connects your home's plumbing to the city's sewer mains is a perfect source of water and nutrients and actually attracts tree roots. To survive the Texas heat, your trees have to send out fine roots which coil themselves inside your sewer line, reducing the amount of room that water can flow through and dramatically increasing the chance for a clog. To make matters worse, most of the homes in our area have clay pipe sewers which let the roots in at the seams. There are a few products like Root-X that are designed to kill the roots without harming the trees, but they can take months to work so the best protection is prevention.

How do I prevent tree roots from clogging my sewer?

Unfortunately, the best way to prevent tree roots from clogging your sewer is to avoid planting water-hungry trees like oak, elm, maple, or ash anywhere near where your sewer line runs. The next best thing is regular maintenance. When you call a professional, it's a good idea to list what types of trees you have growing in your yard. If you suspect you have a tree root problem, All Pro offers video inspection, where a technician actually runs a camera inside your sewer line to check for tree roots, broken pipes, and other possible sewer problems.

Do children use your bathroom?

We get called out all the time for toys and other objects that children have flushed down the toilet. You can imagine how easily a G.I. Joe can get hung up in the twists and turns of your toilet. Your All Pro technician is skilled at removing all types of obstructions from your toilet and drains using the right snake for the job, whether protecting your porcelain, hand-snaking a shower drain, or running a motorized snake the length of your home. However, flushed toys can also get hung up in your sewer, especially if the flow is already restricted by tree roots. Children have also been known to experiment with just how much toilet paper the toilet will flush without backing up! While we appreciate their curiosity, we highly recommend you take a few minutes with your children and with visiting children to discuss the house rules on toilet use.

How long is the hair in your family?

Hair, especially long hair, gets caught up in soap-scum and hard water deposits and can make hair clogs that slow or stop a drain in a surprisingly short time. Some people regularly snake their shower drains themselves, but your first line of defense should be a plastic hair trap over your shower drains. Meanwhile, consider installing a water softener to dramatically reduce the hard water deposits in and on your drains, showerheads, tiles etc. Plus you can also ask your All Pro technician for enzyme to help keep the soap scum down and your drains running clear.

Are you having guests for the holidays?

Thanksgiving and Christmas are extremely busy times for drain cleaners. Most of us tend to tolerate slow drains and then end up with serious clogs when there are more people using our kitchen and bathroom drains. You can set the same ground rules for guests as you do for your family. Meanwhile, please consider printing a pre-holiday online coupon and calling a pro before your guests arrive if you suspect you have slow drains.

What should I expect when I call a professional?

Your All Pro technician will clear your slow and stopped drains while disrupting your lives as little as possible. But more importantly, you can count on All Pro to explain what caused your drain problem and what you can do in the future to prevent it from happening again. All Pro technicians always explain what they are going to do before they get started, and then explain their findings after the work is done. After your technician leaves, we request that you fill out our online feedback form, so we know you are satisfied, and how we can serve you better. 100% customer satisfaction is our goal!

Thank you for the opportunity to earn your business!
